Max L. Starkey Scholarship

At Pyle Law, we understand the financial challenges students and families will face in college can be overwhelming. That’s why we have decided to offer an annual scholarship of $1,000 for a McPherson High School graduate who is pursuing a career in the trades (vocational/technical schools).

The Applications Are Due February 15 Each Year.

My granddad Max L. Starkey was born on April 19, 1918, in Smithfield, West Virginia.  He moved to Oklahoma with his family as a young boy.  He was the oldest of four children and went to work on his own at age 12.  He bought his own car – a Model T – and delivered newspapers in bulk to carriers of the Tulsa daily newspaper.  He would get up early in the morning and then would go to school after work.

Granddad Max married my grandmother Virginia R. Downey in October of 1939.  He was working as a gas station attendant at the time and eventually moved to Kansas to work as an airplane mechanic.  He was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II and was eventually assigned to the U.S. Army Air Corps so he could work on airplanes.  He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army and moved to McPherson, Kansas first working as a mechanic at the local Chevrolet garage until he took a job at the National Cooperative Refinery Association (NCRA) where he worked for 50 years.

Granddad Max and Grandma Starkey had three children – Deanna, my mother Martha, and Susan.

Granddad Max taught me the value of honest work and if something was worth doing, it was worth doing right.  He was a perfectionist.  I am proud to sponsor a scholarship in his name!
